Safari Destination Ideas in Tanzania for Advanced Safari Goers

So, perhaps you have already been to safari in Tanzania and have seen the parks that usually are first choice for first timers to Tanzania - Northern Circuit ( Serengeti, Manyara, Tarangire etc..).
Do you think you have seen it all?
We have to tell you, you have seen only a fraction of Tanzanian natural gems.

There are more amazing parks in Tanzania and no less exciting than northern Circuit.

Actually, many returning clients decide to visit other parks that have all one thing in common, they are less visited, not because they would be less interesting and exciting, but require a little bit more effort to come there.

Here are safari destinations for advanced travellers to Tanzania.

Annual Wildebeest Migration and Serengeti

When booking safari to Serengeti you have to know which area is best for viewing wildebeest migration

Although the furthest in terms of driving its worth the time to get there! Serengeti offers the most unique safari experience that cannot compare to any other African national park or game reserve. Wildlife population in Serengeti is enormous and you should spend at least two nights in Serengeti.

There are approximately 1 .7 million wildebeest, a quarter of million of zebras, and a little less than half a million Thomson’s gazelles. Hyenas are the most numerous among large carnivores exceeding number of 9,000, while there are about 2,800 lions and about 1,000 leopards. The least populated and highly endangered species is black rhino, counting only 12 black rhinos. On a few days in safari in Serengeti you will most likely encounter majority of large and medium African species.
Every day and every game drive is unique and every horizon brings new, exciting and unexpected wildlife encounters.

Timing is everything! Be in the right place at the right time!

Serengeti national park is divided to North, South East, West and Central part.
During great migration in Tanzanian side, it’s essential to know the areas of Serengeti in order to book the right area for best migration game viewing safari experience. Nevertheless animals know no borders but our safari drivers are always updated about wildebeest migration location within Serengeti.

Northern Serengeti

Least visited area of Serengeti, due to least numerous number of wildlife in comparison to other areas in Serengeti. However, due to lesser visitors, Northern Serengeti offers probably the last true African landscape.
Game viewing is at its best it the northern Serengeti when the great herds of Wildebeest and zebras are migrating through the area to and from the Masai Mara and the extreme northern Serengeti.

The northern migration usually makes its way through the northern Serengeti in late July and early August appearing on the Mara watershed in Kenya in early August.
The southern migration through the northern region usually takes place in mid to late October. However, the exact timing of Northern Serengeti migration fluctuates from year to year and is completely dependent upon current rainfall patterns.

Northern Serengeti:
•  LOBO VALLEY
•  UPPER GRUMETI WOODLANDS
•  MARA RIVER
•  LAMAI TRIANGLE

Lobo Valley - Wildlife viewing at Lobo area is at its best during the late dry season from mid July to late November and peaks at the end of the dry season from about mid September to late November when animal concentrations are at their highest. This area is also home to large herds of elephants and is home to second largest lion pride called Lobo Pride.

The legendary wildebeest migration thunders through Lobo twice a year including July and August (during the northward migration) and September through November (during the southward migration.)
Upper Grumetti Woodlands  - Wildebeest migration follows the path through the seasonal Upper Grumeti River Woodlands twice a year including July and August (during the northward migration) and September through November (during the southward migration.) A famous game drive in Grumetti area is called Grumetti game Loop where in 24 kilometers of driving you see the best points within area like Grumetti river!

Mara River – Famous Mara River is the place where most of many documentaries we shot to document great migration crossing the river. Crossing the river is also probably the most dramatic event in great migration story – lurking crocodiles preying on wildebeest in the river, drowning is very common too. Crossing the Mara River is real dramatic event where only the strongest survive. Be prepared for strong scenes with struggling with nature – wildebeest swimming desperately to reach the safe banks, other trumbled to death and some just die of excitement and stress.
It is estimated that approx.. 3000 wildebeest die every year while crossing the Mara River.
The great migration usually begins arriving at the Mara River in early August. The herds then cross and re cross the river during August and September.

Lamai Triangle – The majority of the migration usually resides here from early August until November.

Southern Serengeti plains

THE TRIANGLE
HIDDEN VALLEY
LAKE NDUTU
KUSINI PLAINS
OLDUVAI GORGE
MATITI PLAINS

Safari to Southern Serengeti is doable between December and March where you will witness the blossom of life. Campsites around Lake Ndutu are perfect starting point  for daily game drives within Southern Serengeti which is also a calving ground for Wildebeest, cheetahs having cubs, large birds flocking to lake shores while lion prides have finally chance to hunt. Prepare for unforgettable scenes of miracle of life.

Eastern Serengeti plains:

SAMETU MARSH & KOPJES
 NAABI HILL
  GOL KOPJES
 BARFAFU GORGE & KOPJES
 SOIT LE MONTONYE
 LEMUTA HILL & WATERHOLE
 NASERA ROCK & ANGATA KITI
 SALEI PLAINS & MT. LENGAI
 OLKARIEN GORGE
 LAKE NATRON

You will take safari to Eastern plains of Serengeti in wet season which takes place somewhere between November and May. It is also possible to visit during dry season but plains turn into semi desert and because of harsh conditions there is not much wildlife present.

Wet season in Eastern Serengeti is the best place in Africa to view cheetahs and since cheetahs hunt during the day, it is most likely you will have a chance to witness them during the hunting action. In addition same season in Eastern Serengeti is also abundant with large hyena groups and thousands of wildebeest and other wildlife. Please note whenever you see your favorite wildlife, be it cheetahs or lions, don’t push your driver to drive too close to animals. Make sure you keep a respectable distance.

 Western Serengeti:

RUWANA PLAINS
LOWER GRUMETI WOODLANDS
MBALAGETI RIVER VALLEY
 MUSABI PLAINS

The Western corridor stretches west from Seronera area in the central Serengeti to almost Lake Victoria. Best time to visit Western Serengeti is from mid May to Mid July.

If you are visiting Tanzania in Late November, its also a good time to go on safari in Western Serengeti where its stil possible to catch enormous herds of wildebeest on the way to Southern part of Serengeti. Make sure and consult with operator when you want to include safari to Western Serengeti in your safari itinerary, if its feasible or not to visit western side.

Western Serengeti is mainly home to large number of wildebeest and zebras that do not join the annual migration for some reason, as well as place to see buffalo, eland, topi, impala, Thomson’s gazelle and waterbuck. Big cats are seen but not so frequently as in Central Serengeti.

Central Serengeti plains:

SERONERA VALLEY
SERONERA RIVER
RETINA POOL
MORU KOPJES
MAASAI KOPJES
MAKOMA HILL
TURNERS SPRING
SIMBA KOPJES
LONG GRASS PLAINS

The majority of the lodging in Serengeti is located in Central area. For a good reason as Central Serengeti remains resident wildlife throughout the year.  If you visit during dry season from June to November you will have best game viewing experience – seeing resident animals, but if you want to see migration you have to plan safari to Central Serengeti in wet season. No matter of the time of the year it is most likely that you will have luck and see all four large predators lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena, in one day game drive.

Shadows of Africa offers four new itineraries in Tanzania and Zanzibar with time also spent helping directly and indirectly at the Kibowa Orphanage in Arusha

Visiting Arusha? - Visit Kibowa Orphans

A unique travel agent is encouraging travelers planning their 2013 trips abroad to consider ‘traveling with purpose’ in the New Year. Bespoke agency Shadows of Africa arranges sustainable safaris and tours throughout Africa. It has launched a dedicated ‘Traveling with Purpose’ package, combining four of its most popular itineraries with time spent at a local orphanage.

With a unique focus on making a positive contribution to the destinations visited and lasting impact on local people en-route, the new Traveling with Purpose packages are designed to sate a thirst for adventure with the chance to spend time giving back. Combining an exploration of majestic Tanzania with the opportunity to meet new people, become immersed in a vibrant new culture and help those who need it most, Shadows of Africa’s 2013 Traveling with Purpose itineraries will benefit the Kibowa Orphanage in Arusha, Tanzania.

Natasa Fras, CEO said, “Our new Traveling with Purpose itineraries are a unique chance to see Tanzania through the eyes of an explorer, an adventurer and an individual whose little act of kindness means the world to the people encountered. Anyone can book a place on a Traveling with Purpose package and help by spending time with the children, sharing their skills or simply engaging in a daily activity. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to volunteer without the luxury of taking six months off work and to see Africa up close and personal, delving beneath the façade to discover what really makes the iconic landscape, cultures and people tick.”

In addition to volunteering at the orphanage, a proportion of the cost of the trip is devoted to the centre, helping to cover the daily cost of food for Kibowa’s 44 children as well as schooling, shoes, housing and supplies. Shadows of Africa has already placed each of the 44 children in a private school, which provides classes in English, and purchased books, clothes and daily meals.

Travelers can choose from eight, 13 and 18 day tours. Option one couples two days at the orphans centre with an awe-inspiring Kilimanjaro climb, safari and several days relaxation on Zanzibar’s spice island. Set over 18 days, this itinerary can also be enjoyed over an eight day stay.

A third itinerary sets aside a three day intern at Kibowa with the remainder of the 18 day trip dedicated to an extensive exploration of beautiful Tanzania. For those with less time, a second 13 day alternative provides time at the orphanage along with a cultural and safari adventure.

Ms Fras added, “All of those who have enjoyed a Travel with Purpose itinerary so far are still connected with us, helping to raise funds and promote the orphanage. Travel to Tanzania could be life changing. Whether you are planning the trip of a lifetime, a gap year abroad or simply need a holiday, you can make a difference when you travel, not only for yourself but for the people and places you visit.” To learn more about the Traveling with Purpose packages, Kibowa orphanage and Shadows of Africa, visit www.shadowsofafrica.com

7 Tips on How to Save on Safari to Tanzania

Get an idea on how to save on safari to Tanzania

Let's go

Even though we cater to all budget audiences this time our post is dedicated to those who are looking for a cheap safari to Tanzania and hopefully our advice will help you to get an idea on how to save on safari to Tanzania.

Safari in Tanzania is probably once in a lifetime event for many of you and spending a fortune is not necessary in order to see big 5!

1.  Book local safari operator - there are many on-line sites offering on-line safari offers that are based outside Tanzania, most commonly in UK and USA, offering astronomic prices and actually don't have any offices in Tanzania. They hire local agencies, which means you will be over paying for Tanzanian safari as they only take huge commission for bringing the clients to third party operators.

2. Go for camping safari if you You are on a limited budget, be adventurous once in a life time, take camping safari as luxury lodges only add to the cost. Don't be afraid of camping: all our camping safaris in Tanzania are within secured campsites with all necessary facilities. In addition we provide you with new and clean tents, sleeping bags, nice camping chairs, including cook that will cook for you all meals.

1  3. Go to Tanzanian safari in low season - if you really want to save on safari to Tanzania, this tip demands a compensation: select low season when prices are lower,  you might not see wildebeest migration but you will still enjoy animals in their habitat. Going to safari in Tanzania in low season doesn't mean you will not see any of them.

   4. Choose less visited Tanzanian parks – for example, Tarangire is secret gem and once you will see it you will know what we are talking about!

Tarangire landscape

    5. Join a group safari - another way to save your self few dollars is to simply contact us and join to any of available groups. Our groups are continuously available through the whole year. Another advantage of group safaris organized by Shadows of Africa is that we only allow maximum 4 people in a group. We want you to enjoy and be comfortable during your lifetime trip to Tanzania.

     6. Go for Daily safari to parks in close proximity of Arusha. If you really are on a tight, tight budget and would like to at least taste the safari experience, then go for a day trip to Tarangire National Park or Arusha National Park. One-day safari is only feasible with those two parks in Northern Circuit due to reasonable proximity.

    7. Do cheaper trips in the Kilimanjaro Area. Tanzania is beautiful and if you think you have to skip safari due to financial or any other reasons, then we have many other places to show you in Kilimanjaro region. From Kilimanjaro national park hikes, cultural visit to villages around Moshi, we can take you to waterfalls In Merangu  or Materuni or to crater lake Chala.
